About Windsor Guildhall
Windsor Guildhall is a historic Grade I listed building, recognised for its national importance. It was designed by Sir Thomas Fitch and completed in 1690 as part of a plan to improve Windsor and make it suitable for a town with a royal residence. For centuries, the Guildhall was at the heart of local government. It was used by the Mayor and the Corporation (the early town council) and also served as a magistrates’ court. Markets were held outside on the Corn Market, and as activity increased, an extension was added in 1829. In 1974, the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead was created, and the main council offices moved to Maidenhead Town Hall. After this, Windsor Guildhall continued to host events and occasional council meetings.
In 1998, it became a licensed wedding venue, giving the building a new purpose. Today, Windsor Guildhall is a popular venue for weddings and special events of local, national and international importance. Notably, Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla were married here in April 2005. Sir Elton John and David Furnish also held their civil partnership ceremony at the Guildhall in December of the same year.
